I have just installed a cool web logging tool called Drivel. It allows you to update your web log from a gnome app rather than via the site. This is handy as I’m too lazy to wait for a page to load.
I’ve recently ditched debian as my distro choice for my media centre and gone with gentoo (less hastle for new dvb card). I’m also updating the gentoo wiki with details on how to set up your own freevo box incase you’re interested. It’s quite amazing what you can do with a spare computer and a bit of free time.
I don’t know what kind of storage capabilities it has, but Microsoft are doing free USB keys, click the usb key image: from here and follow the instructions. You’ll have to use your ms passport login to do it. Answers are 4, false, true, true (or 2,true,true,true? I dunno, probably makes no difference) (so I’ve been told anyway). You might want to format it as soon as you get it!
I recently discovered ajchat, it’s a chatroom thing for your website, although it uses the infamous ‘ajax’ method of doing things. This means that it’s smooth. I tried it out and it IS smooth, as smooth as IRC which is very nice indeed and makes it a real option for websites, or just a web IM client thing.

I think this is probably a bug in FC4, even after you install with a GB setup you still get a US date in some apps such as firefox. To resolve this (it’s quite easy), simply replace en_US in your /etc/sysconfig/i18n file with en_GB. You’ll probably need to restart your system before the change takes effect, but it seems to fix all your LC_ environment variables also which is nice.
Here’s a site worth checking out: Boltfish recordings. They offer cd quality mp3s of almost all of their releases with the option to buy the CD for a realistic price should you feel the tunes are worth it. They have been around for some time, so I guess it’s working! They do chilled out electronic music, worth a listen.
Here’s why you should steer clear of trusted computing. Trusted computing article. This is really quite important if you intend to keep using your computer for the future. Well worth a read.
Make sure you’re in control of your computer, at least a little bit eh?
I’ve almost got my new media centre PC working as it should. I’ve recently downloaded a cool bit of PVR software for linux called Freevo. Definitely worth a look at, setting up your own media pc can be cheap if you have access to an old pc.
If you want to get TV out to work on Linux on Radeon 7000, don’t bother with all those little tools and things (unless you want something other than ‘clone’ mode). Simply plug in your svideo cable and use the ‘vesa’ driver for X rather than radeon. I tried for a long time to find the right modeline to use but couldn’t get it to work. However, I’ll try some more later on, chances are I might be able to find the current modeline from the vesa driver and use it on the radeon/ati one.
